Supporting Young Carers

The Education Authority is proud to have been a partner in this initiative to develop a resource which is designed to help primary and post primary schools understand the needs of young carers.

It is important that schools know how to identify who these young people are and that they do all that they can to enhance the support provided to children and young people who have caring responsibilities.

This booklet is an invaluable resource for teachers and other staff working with young people in education settings who can provide support for young carers.

It also highlights for schools, good practice in identifying and supporting young carers that schools may not be aware of. It sets out five key steps for setting up a framework of support for young carers in schools and provides helpful advice for schools wishing to develop a young carers’ policy.

Further information is also available from Barnardos and Action for Children Young Carers Project

The Education and Library Boards (ELBs) were dissolved on 31 March 2015. The Education Authority was established on 01 April 2015 and is now responsible for all of the operational functions previously carried out by the five ELBs in accordance with the Education Orders.
