A Special Visit by HRH The Princess Royal to Ballykelly PS
Thursday, 7 February 2019 was a historic day in the life of Ballykelly Primary School, Limavady.
In partnership with The Fishmongers' Company London, Ballykelly PS received a special visit from HRH The Princess Royal.
On arrival, The Princess Royal was greeted by Principal Helen Cole who introduced HRH to Vice-Principal Samatha McDonald, Chair of the Board of Governors Rev Alan Wilson and EA Chief Executive Gavin Boyd. Pupils and members of staff formed a Guard of Honour.
EA Chief Executive, Gavin Boyd said:
“On behalf of EA it was a great honour to welcome The Princess Royal to Ballykelly PS this afternoon. The visit commemorated the long-standing connection with the school, The Fishmongers’ Company and the local community. The Fishmongers’ Woodland Trail is a great example of how an underused space has been transformed into a beautiful wide life sanctuary and outside classroom for pupils to connect with nature.”
Pupils waved specially created ‘fish flags’ which were admired by HRH Princess Anne. Along the Fishmongers’ Trail, P7 pupils toasted marshmallows and learnt camp craft skills from Carrowmena Activity Centre staff.
HRH was introduced to Laura Clarke who designed and facilitated the making of the Ballykelly Community Mural and made suggestions as to how this could be used by the Fishmongers' Company.
Before leaving, The Princess Royal unveiled a plaque to commemorate her visit and spoke highly of the link established between the Fishmongers' Company and Ballykelly PS.
Principal Cole said:
“Pupils and staff were excited to be a part of the royal visit. The pupils were fantastic ambassadors of the school.”
