Book Week NI 2024
21 October 2024
Book Week NI is a week-long initiative celebrating the pleasures and benefits of reading and, as we approach its ninth year, we hope this year that schools can add Book Week NI and a focus on reading to their calendars.
On Monday 21 October to Sunday 27 October, as part of the overall week, we are encouraging children, teachers, and parents/carers to take time to read and to make books and reading an important part of family activities.
Taking even 15 minutes out of a busy schedule can make such a positive difference as there are so many benefits to be gained from reading! Our goal during Book Week NI is to encourage children and adults to read for fun. To discover the joy in a good book and to encourage everyone to take time this week to stop and read.
Whatever way you decide to take part, we would love you to join the vibrant online discussion through the hashtags #BookWeekNI and #OurBigRead, and by tagging the Education Authority in your Book Week social media posts.

To mark #BookWeekNI we asked our CEO and #BookWeekNI Ambassador Richard Pengelly about reading to his own children and how it encouraged them to read from a young age.
“A firm favourite in my house was One Snowy Night by Nick Butterworth. The book centres on Percy the Park Keeper who invites the animals into his hut to keep warm on a cold wintery night. It is a warm and welcoming story, and there were a few giggles from my boys as all the animals try to fit into the bed and start to fall out.

“I am proud to be an Ambassador for and to support and celebrate #BookWeekNI.”
