Induction and Early Professional Development (EPD) normally take 3 years to complete (possibly longer depending on your employment circumstances). You will be supported through this process by the Induction and EPD team at the Education Authority. You will also receive advice, guidance and support from your Teacher Tutor and other colleagues in the school(s) in which you may be working.
Stages of Teacher Education
The three main stages of Teacher Education are:
- Initial Teacher Education
- Induction - the first year of teaching
- Early Professional Development
- EPD Year 1 (normally the second year of teaching)
- EPD Year 2 (normally the third year of teaching)
What do you do next?
- Register with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI).
- To supply teach, register with the Northern Ireland Supply Teacher Register (NISTR).
- To access ECT professional learning opportunities and receive updates register with the Education Authority. Please note that registration reopens on 21 August 2026.
