GenAI for Teaching and Learning

Providing tools, training and guidance for the adoption of AI in education.

EdIS/C2k are delivering Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) capabilities to all teachers in NI. This technology uses AI to generate new content such as text, image, audio or video by learning patterns from existing data.

This digital transformation will support a reduction in teacher workload and improve wellbeing with outcomes including:

  • reduced administrative burden
  • improved efficiency in planning and preparation
  • enhanced preparation of teaching and learning resources
  • strengthened teacher capability through training and guidance
  • support innovation in teaching and learning

Phase 1 Rollout

The project will launch at a series of GenAI Leadership Conferences for Principals in June 2026. The conferences will provide important strategic context, share learning from the proof-of-concept pilots, outline what the GenAI offer means for schools, and set out the role of principals in supporting successful implementation. It will also provide clarity on safeguards, training requirements, leadership expectations and next steps.

As school leaders, principals have a critical role in setting the culture for safe, effective and purposeful use of GenAI within their schools.

Support will be provided through structured professional learning and training programmes for teachers and supporting staff. Peer-to-peer learning models will enhance delivery through shared experiences from pilot schools.

Supporting materials, policies, and safe-use guidance will be provided to enable responsible and effective use of generative AI in schools.

Safeguarding and Data Protection

Safeguarding and responsible use are central to the rollout of Gen AI across NI schools. Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini are provided within secure, managed environments, ensuring alignment with existing school systems, policies and controls. We are committed to ensuring that the use of AI in education is:

  • Safe – protecting pupils and staff
  • Secure – operating within trusted platforms
  • Compliant – aligned with UK GDPR and EA data protection policies
  • Ethical – supporting fair, inclusive and responsible practice

Research and Feasibility

GenAI Proof of Concept culminated in the Trailblazing NI Report published by the University of Ulster, which assessed the impact of this technology in education. Presentations on experiences and findings are available to watch.

Next Steps

Principals will continue to be supported to adopt GenAI tools and to grow confidence and expertise throughout the 2026/27 academic year. A GenAI lead will be identified in each school to coordinate dissemination of knowledge to their colleagues. All teachers will be offered a licence in the next academic year using a phased approach to ensure appropriate training and support for use.
