Freedom of Information School Guidance

Information and resources for schools to support compliance with Freedom of Information legislation.

The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) 2000 came into full force on 1 January 2005. As public bodies, schools are obliged, under the FOIA, to publish certain information about their activities and to produce information requested by members of the public (if they hold it) unless there is a good reason to withhold some or all of it.

The FOIA covers rights of access to and requests for non-personal data. It is important to remember that the FOIA does not cover requests for personal data as this is covered by the UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018.  Access to personal data is made via a Subject Access Request and not a Freedom of Information Request.

This Freedom of Information School Resource Hub provides Information and resources for schools to support compliance with Freedom of Information legislation.
