Downpatrick Pupils Build Friendships and Shared Understanding Through PEACEPLUS ASPIRE Residential
22 June 2026
Pupils from Lecale Trinity Grammar School and Down High School have strengthened friendships, teamwork and shared understanding through a recent PEACEPLUS ASPIRE residential at Lorne House.
The Downpatrick schools came together for a dynamic programme of outdoor learning and team-building activities designed to encourage collaboration, resilience and positive relationships. Pupils took part in hands-on challenges including fire-building, climbing and group problem-solving tasks, working together in a supportive environment that helped build confidence and trust across both school communities.
A highlight of the residential was an engaging talk delivered by a young newcomer to Northern Ireland, who shared her personal experiences and encouraged pupils to consider how they can help newcomers feel welcomed and included in their schools and wider communities. The session sparked thoughtful discussion and deepened pupils’ understanding of inclusion, diversity and belonging.
The residential experience is part of wider collaborative work between the two schools through PEACEPLUS ASPIRE. Pupils have also been creating a community mural exploring themes of shared identity and belonging. The mural is due to be unveiled in Downpatrick in the coming weeks and will serve as a lasting symbol of partnership and connection.
The programme concluded with a guided bus tour of Belfast, giving pupils the opportunity to explore significant historical sites and symbols while developing a greater awareness of the region’s complex history and cultural landscape.
Through shared experiences such as the Lorne House residential, Lecale Trinity Grammar School and Down High School are continuing to promote good relations, build lasting partnerships and support young people to become confident, compassionate and active members of their communities.
The PEACEPLUS ASPIRE project is led by the Education Authority in partnership with Léargas, Early Years – the organisation for young children, the National Childhood Network, and the Fermanagh Trust. The project is funded by PEACEPLUS, a programme administered by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB).
