The EA last week welcomed proposals for Trade Union engagement on SEN planning. Today’s meeting with the Northern Ireland Teachers' Council focused on breaking the annual cycle of uncertainty and delay over SEN places.

Currently, 26% of mainstream schools in NI offer specialised SEN provision. The EA is aiming to significantly increase that figure.

A key priority for today’s discussions was ensuring schools receive proper support to deliver the best possible outcomes for the children and young people within their communities.

Dale Hanna, Education Authority Chief Operating Officer, said:

"This engagement has been extremely positive in identifying practical solutions for developing specialist provision within mainstream schools.

“Through this constructive approach, we can help ensure schools receive the support they need to deliver the best possible education for all children, including those with special educational needs who enrich our school communities in countless ways."

Direct discussions with school leaders are also planned in the coming days. Engagement with schools on SEN provision is a year-round priority for EA.
