You will be aware there has been a significant increase in demand for special school places.

The Education Authority (EA) has been working since January 2020 to provide additional accommodation across many schools and areas, and this will continue for as long as necessary.

To date, the works have provided additional classrooms in some special schools where space was available; the setting up of dual campus sites for some special schools; and the establishment of specialist provision in mainstream schools across some areas.

To help to alleviate capacity pressures and ensure pathways are developed to support children throughout their educational journey, the EA has acquired use of an existing school site at Deanby Gardens in North Belfast to develop a new special school provision, the Deanby Centre.

The first phase of the project will welcome up to 56 foundation stage through to Key Stage two pupils and 16 pre-school pupils this year and the provision will be managed and supported by the EA.

We will continue to work closely with all stakeholders and provide updates on this exciting project as it progresses.
