Thousands of Governors Volunteer to Make a Real Difference
When you think about people who volunteer, would school governors jump to mind? Possibly not! School governors are one of, if not the largest group of volunteers in Northern Ireland.
Every school, no matter what size or type, is managed by a board of at least eight governors. Some school boards include 16 or even 27 governors.
Helen Fraser, Head of School Governance at the Education Authority said:
“Being a school governor can be a rewarding and enriching experience. Everyone who volunteers for the role gets the opportunity to make a valuable contribution to their local community by supporting the education of children and young people.”
School Boards of Governors are usually reconstituted every four years, which means that the membership of each Board of Governors is refreshed. Some experienced governors apply to serve for a further term of office, though the Department of Education and Education Authority are keen to encourage volunteers who are new to the role of governor.
No specific skills or knowledge are needed to be a school governor, though volunteers will need commitment, energy and enthusiasm, and they should be willing to undertake training in the role of governor.
School governors are currently being reconstituted and the Department and Education Authority are seeking volunteers from across all areas in Northern Ireland to apply to be a school governor.
