Young Musicians Shine at Gala
27 March 2026
More than 500 young musicians from schools across the north Antrim and mid Ulster area came together for the EA Music Spring Gala 2026 (Thursday 26 March 2026), a major celebration of youth music hosted in partnership with Ulster University at its Coleraine Campus.
The gala brought together school pupils from EA Music hubs in Ballyclare, Ballymena, Ballymoney and Maghera, marking the first time all ensembles had performed together since the introduction of EA Music’s new hub structure.
The revised model established three Junior and Intermediate hubs in Ballyclare, Ballymoney and Maghera, each offering string orchestras and wind bands for developing musicians. A fourth hub in Ballymena supports senior pupils through the Northern Youth Orchestra. The approach enables pupils to access ensemble opportunities closer to home while still coming together for larger showcase events.
Earlier in the winter, each hub hosted local concerts, allowing pupils to perform within their communities before joining together for this large-scale gala event.
Following an afternoon of rehearsals and collaboration, the young performers delivered an uplifting evening concert showcasing the breadth of musical talent across the region. The programme featured performances by Junior String Orchestras playing Stars, Dragon Slayer and Banuwa, while the Wind Bands performed More Cobwell, Bandroom Rock and Espresso.
Intermediate String Orchestras presented a varied programme including Arrival of the Queen of Sheba, Lord of the Dance and The Final Countdown. The concert concluded with performances from the Northern Youth Orchestra featuring Hopak from Sorochinsky Fair, The Continental and Fallingwater.
Eve Bremner Chief Education Officer of the Education Authority (EA) was in attendance and praised the young performers and the collaborative spirit of the event.
“Seeing so many young musicians performing together is a powerful reminder of the role music plays in education and in bringing communities together. The dedication shown by these pupils, supported by their teachers and families, is truly inspiring. Events like the Spring Gala highlight the creativity, confidence and teamwork that music education helps to develop in our young people.”
Janet Cooke, EA Music Locality Lead, said the gala was a remarkable occasion for pupils from across the area.
“The Spring Gala has been a fantastic opportunity for pupils from Ballyclare, Ballymena, Ballymoney and Maghera to come together as one musical community. Spending the afternoon rehearsing before performing on stage in the evening has created a wonderful sense of excitement and achievement for everyone involved.
“It is inspiring to see so many young people sharing their passion for music and performing together in such a positive and supportive environment.”
The Spring Gala continues to be an important event for EA Music, celebrating the achievements of young musicians and showcasing the musical talent developing across the North Antrim and mid Ulster area.
