Celebrating Our School Governors During Volunteers’ Week
1 June 2026
The Education Authority is proud to recognise and celebrate the invaluable contribution of school governors, whose dedication, expertise and time play a vital role in supporting our schools and communities as part of Volunteers’ Week (1–7 June 2026).
School governors are volunteers who bring a wide range of skills and experience to their roles. They help shape the strategic direction of schools, support and challenge school leadership teams, and work to ensure the best possible outcomes for children and young people.
Although much of their work takes place behind the scenes, governors are essential to the success of our education system. Their commitment ensures that schools are well managed, forward-thinking, and focused on delivering high-quality teaching and learning.
Volunteers’ Week is a UK-wide campaign held annually to recognise and celebrate the contribution of volunteers. It provides an opportunity to thank volunteers and to highlight the positive impact volunteering has on communities.
Head of School Governance Helen Fraser said:
“As part of Volunteers’ Week, we extend our sincere thanks to all school governors for their continued commitment and dedication to improving education for children and young people. Volunteers are often the unseen force working quietly behind the scenes, and it is important that we take this opportunity to recognise and celebrate their invaluable contribution.
Our governors bring a wealth of experience, insight and expertise to their roles, helping to drive improvement and strengthen school communities. Their dedication makes a real and lasting difference to the lives of pupils across Northern Ireland, and their efforts truly deserve to be acknowledged.”
