Little Book of Bouncing Back for Children - Little Book of Bouncing Back for Children
Sometimes we can find things hard or difficult.
You got this
Never give up
It is important that we keep trying and don’t give up
This is called Resilience.
Change Your Words to Change Your Thinking
Things Resilient People Say!
- “If at first you don’t succeed, try again.”
- “F-E-A-R has two meanings: ‘Forget Everything And Run’ or ‘Face Everything And Rise.’ The choice is yours.”
- “Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, ‘I will try again tomorrow.”
Resilience Story
Nicola is feeling frustrated. She is annoyed and tearful.
She’s spent the last hour trying to complete her maths homework.
In the classroom it all made sense, but now that she’s home, she can’t remember how to do it: she keeps getting stuck.
Nicola’s mum appears in the doorway, “Take a break, I’ll help you with this after dinner”.
You can do it.
What is frustration? How does it make you feel?
Why is Nicola feeling annoyed? Have you ever felt this way?
Why is it a good idea to take a break? Is Nicola’s Mum helping the right thing? Why/Why not?
What is Resilience?
Resilience is being able to cope with things when they go wrong.
It is about trying your best and being strong on the inside.
Resilience is our ability to bounce back when things go wrong. We keep trying, even though we may have setbacks or failures.
Resilience
Resilience is also about change. You can learn what needs to change so you can change failures into success.
Everyone can be resilient – we can build our resilience!
Beating the odds while also changing the odds!

What is unhelpful thinking?
Our brains are brilliant! They do lots of very important jobs, but they can also be really unhelpful.
Brains sometimes focus on the big and unhappy feelings. It’s good to remember that all feelings are important. But always thinking about negative feelings can become a habit.
You can train your brain to think differently and not be overcome by your big emotions!
If they were really sad, what would your favourite character do?!
